Deepika Padukone's Chhapaak and Ajay Devgn's Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior hit the screens on January 10. While the latter's film has already crossed the Rs 50-crore mark, Meghna Gulzar's film based on the life of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal could manage to earn just Rs 19.02 crore in first three days of its release. At least that's what the cold figures say.

"Trade analysts" have been saying that Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is receiving a 'spectacular' response from the audience at the box office, while Chhapaak got a dull start. The box office numbers of the two films affirm, ostensibly, the declarations made by the analysts. But the picture is different when we delve deeper and find what the numbers actually reveal.

SCREEN COUNT

Ajay Devgn's Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, which also stars Kajol and Saif Ali Khan in pivotal roles, opened with a screen count of 4,540 worldwide. This includes 3,880 screens in 2D and 3D formats in Hindi and Marathi versions and 660 screens overseas. Chhapaak, on the other hand, is a small film which opened in only 2,160 screens worldwide. The film has a screen count of 1,700 in India and 460 overseas.

The screen count clearly shows the difference between the level at which both the films have been released - Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior is more than double of what Chhapaak is.

BUDGET AND PROFIT

When it comes to the profit earned by both the films, Meghna Gulzar's Chhapaak, being a small film made on a budget of just Rs 35 crore, seems to be leading the big-budget Tanhaji, made on a whopping Rs 150 crore budget.

The comparison between the box office collection of the two films till now reveals that Chhapaak is performing better at the box office than Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior.

In three days of release, Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior has earned Rs 61.75 crore (Friday: Rs 15.1 crore, Saturday: Rs 20.57 crore and Sunday: Rs 26.08 crore). The film, which boasts of eye-catching CGI and VFX, has been made on an expenditure of Rs 150 crore. Till Sunday, the Om Raut directorial film has recovered around 41 per cent of the amount invested in it.

Chhapaak, on the other hand, has earned Rs 19.02 crore till Sunday (Friday: Rs 4.77 crore, Saturday: Rs 6.9 crore and Sunday: Rs 7.35 crore). Basic Maths tells us that Chhapaak, which is made on a budget of Rs 35 crore, has recovered around 54.3 per cent of the amount invested in it, which is clearly more than what Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior has recovered.
