As the coronavirus pandemic progresses, the Odisha government is leaving no stone unturned to stockpile crucial medical equipment like testing kits, personal protective equipment (PPEs) and ventilators.

The Odisha State Medical Corporation Limited (OSMCL) began preparations in late January and procured around 4,000 test kits from Pune, its managing director Yamini Sarangi said.

Current stocks at the OSMCL include 299 ICU ventilators (orders have been placed for over 400 more, 57 of which have been received), 1.18 crore triple layer surgical masks, over 71,800 N-95 masks and more than 66,000 PPEs.

There are enough stocks for five months -- these include essential medicines -- and orders have been placed for supplies that will last four additional months, Sarangi said.

"We are very concerned about the safety of doctors and paramedics," Yamini Sarangi told India Today TV.

"We are very serious in procuring medical equipment and medicines in an aggressive way."

Dr Gitanjali Batmanabane, director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, told India Today TV there were adequate stocks of PPEs and other medical equipment.

Odisha currently has 54 coronavirus cases, according to central government data. Twelve people have recovered and one has died.
